About this trip

My name is Jaan-Eric Fischer and I have been travelling and working as a magazine photographer across the world for over 20 years. I have always been captivated by Africa’s extraordinary diversity, raw beauty, and untamed spirit. I developed a deep passion for travelling with my cameras into the remote areas and untouched corners of this continent, where I found some of my most powerful and meaningful photographic experiences. Together with Safaris for Africa, I want to share this passion and my experience with you through truly unique photographic expeditions — journeys designed entirely around the image. Each journey is limited to a maximum of 12 photographers, allowing us to travel as a small, like-minded group to create meaningful connections with the people, cultures, and landscapes around us. Whether you are an experienced professional or simply someone who has always wanted to take your photography further, you are warmly invited.

Daily Itinerary Summary

Days 1 - 3: Eswatini

  • Welcome to South Africa!

  • On arrival at Johannesburg Airport, meet your photographer Jaan and your guides.

  • Catch a flight from O.R. Tambo International Airport to King Mswati III International Airport with the group.

  • Travel to your lodge, which is one hour from the airport and located in the Ezulwini Valley (Valley of Heaven).

  • Check-in and welcome dinner with the whole team at the Eswatini Lodge.

  • During this section of the trip, we will cover the first field photography workshop: introducing you and your camera; environmental portraiture; natural light.

  • Over the next two days, we will meet different communities in the area and experience daily village life by immersing ourselves in intimate environments, such as women preparing food, plaiting grass, beadwork and ritual gatherings. A backdrop option for editorial portraiture is available.

  • Walk to Mantenga Falls, Eswatini's largest waterfall.

Workshop 1: Faces can hold stories of a lifetime

Every powerful portrait starts with a connection — and in these first communities we visit, you'll learn exactly what that means when put into practice.

We'll refine our eye for editorial portraiture — contrasting the vibrant traditional garments of village elders against the beehive huts, or, for those wanting more creative control, our mobile canvas backdrop. We'll also take in the Mantenga Falls, Eswatini's largest waterfall, visit Ngwenya Glass to see age-old glass-blowing traditions, and close our days at the lively Swazi Market — every stop another chance to practise observation before shooting.

Days 4 - 6: Big Five Safari

  • Travel along the Elephant Coast to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

  • Check into your lodge.

  • Interactive photography workshop with a focus on wildlife photography, fast shutter techniques and working with unpredictable natural light.

  • One photographic night drive with special torches for epic night-light shots.

  • Safari on foot for unique perspectives.

Workshop 2: Fast shutter against magical light

Across these three days, we'll head out in open safari vehicles and on foot for unique perspectives in search of the Big Five. Our rangers and trackers know this part of the world like the back of their hands and they know exactly what we're here for. They'll take us deeper into this magical reserve than a typical safari would ever go.

This is where you'll grow as a true wildlife photographer. It is the chance to learn patience at waterholes on an early morning drive. It is anticipating the movement of passing cheetahs against a sunlit landscape before they cross our lenses.

Let us walk on foot through this wild, untouched land and discover what waits for us within it.

Day 7: Umhlanga Rocks

  • This morning, after a last game drive, we travel to Umhlanga Rocks — a relaxed coastal town that gives us the perfect pause point in the journey. This is the day we look backward before we look forward.

A Masterclass in Editing and Colour Grading

In the afternoon, we'll sit together for a hands-on photographic masterclass as we dive deep into the process of editing, colour grading, bringing your best shots to life and selecting the best shot. You'll have the chance to present your own images from the trip so far to the group. This is where new photographic themes really start to click into place: what story are you telling with your images? What's your visual signature emerging as? I'll work with you one-on-one to refine your strongest shots, ready to become fine art prints back at home.

Days 8 - 10: Sani Pass and the Kingdom of Lesotho

  • Travel to the base of Sani Pass.

  • Transfer into 4x4 jeeps and traverse the iconic Sani Pass.

  • Ascend to the summit into Lesotho, 2,876m above sea level, capturing breathtaking landscape material along the way.

  • Visit small shepherds' villages and huts along the route, stopping regularly for photographic opportunities.

  • Experience the Leribe craft market, where women weave mohair, and take in the blanket presentation ceremony.

  • Before sunset, we'll hike towards the Maletsunyane Falls, known as the 'Place of Smoke', for golden-hour landscape work that will reward every one of us with breathtaking images.

  • Your 3-night stay in Lesotho will be split between an authentic hut overnight experience and Semonkong Lodge

  • Our last team dinner of the trip will be at a one-of-a-kind lodge where horses, pack donkeys and cows wander through.

Workshop 4: High-altitude landscapes, stylised portraiture, cultural immersion

Keep your camera close: this is prime territory for the rare bearded vulture, soaring on the thermals above the switchbacks. As we crest into the highlands, the landscape opens into an immense alpine plateau dotted with isolated stone huts. This is Basotho shepherd country — herders who spend months in complete isolation tending Angora goats and Merino sheep, living a rhythm of life almost untouched by the outside world.

Here, our photography shifts again — into high-end reportage and stylised portraiture.
