The Sabi Sands Game Reserve got its name from the Sabi and Sand rivers that flow through its interior and is one of Africa’s most exclusive game reserves and most certainly the pinnacle safari destination in South Africa. Sharing an unfenced border with the Kruger National Park, the reserve is made up of a massive 65’000 hectares of land where animals can roam freely in a natural environment. The famous Big Five (Buffalo, Elephant, Lion, Leopard, and Rhino) frequent this region, including over 500 different bird species and other wildlife such as Giraffe, Zebras, Hyenas, Hippos, Wild Dogs, and many Antelope species. Renowned for leopard sightings, the Sabi Sands attracts visitors from all over the world to view these elusive animals up close, and this means exceptional photographic opportunities for novices and professional alike. We recommend spending a minimum of two nights in the reserve to get the most out of your time here and there are numerous lodges that vary in price and comfort, from the ultra-luxurious to the more affordable. These lodges will include meals, safari game drives, and extra comfort for your time in the bush; you can also expect front row seats when it comes to wildlife viewing as they have a vehicle limit at animal sightings in the reserve. Another advantage of a safari in the Sabi Sands is that your ranger is allowed to go off-road, meaning if you are tracking a leopard, he is permitted to follow it into the bush – a thrilling experience that will have you on the edge of your seats! Game drives depart in the early mornings and late afternoons as these are the times when animals are most active, and they will usually last around three hours with a comfort break in between for drinks, snacks, and the chance to experience a ‘loo with a view!’. During the day there is time to relax, swim and use the lodge’s facilities – this may include a gym, spa treatments or your own private plunge pool, depending on where you are staying. Bush walks are available at some of the lodges and can be arranged on your behalf. Please have a look at our accommodation selection and select which lodge you would like included in your safari package.
