Explore the Great Migration month by month using GPS tracking data from migratory wildebeest between 2019 and 2023. The darker areas show where the tracked wildebeest were most commonly found each month, while the lighter areas show the wider area they travelled across.

Southern Serengeti & Ndutu
The tracked wildebeest were most concentrated across the southern plains, with a wider spread around the southern Serengeti.
February
Ndutu & Southern Plains
The strongest concentration remained on the southern plains around the main calving period, with tracked animals also spread across the wider southern area.
March
Southern Serengeti & Ndutu
The core distribution remained in the south, although the GPS data shows a wider spread around the southern Serengeti before the main northward movement.
April
Southern to Central Serengeti
The distribution began shifting north. Some tracked wildebeest remained in the south while others were recorded farther north towards Moru and the central Serengeti.
May
Central Serengeti towards the Western Corridor
The northward movement became clearer, with the core distribution moving through the central Serengeti and the wider distribution extending towards the west.
June
Western Corridor & Central Serengeti
The tracked wildebeest were spread across a broad area, with a strong westward and northward shift through the Western Corridor and central Serengeti.
July
Northern Serengeti
The core distribution shifted into the northern Serengeti, while the wider GPS distribution still extended farther south and west.
August
Northern Serengeti & Mara River
The strongest concentration was in the northern Serengeti and around the Mara River, with the wider distribution extending across the surrounding northern area.
September
Northern Serengeti
The core distribution remained in the north, while tracked wildebeest were recorded across a wider area of the northern Serengeti and Mara region.
October
Northern to Central Serengeti
The GPS data shows a broad southward transition. The core distribution had moved farther south, while the wider distribution still included parts of the northern Serengeti and Mara region.
November
Central Serengeti
The southward movement became clearer, with the core distribution around the central Serengeti and a much wider spread from the north towards the southern plains.
December
Central to Southern Serengeti
The core distribution shifted farther south as tracked wildebeest moved towards the southern plains, although the wider monthly distribution remained broad.
