About this trip

Hiking and spending the night in the vastness of the African savannah offers the most intense nature experience. The red sand dunes and the grass and tree planes of the Kalahari will captivate every traveller. Feel the hot desert wind on your skin; watch antelope herds in the vast veld; spot giraffes feeding among the trees; and take in the burning African sunset.
Enjoy an African Braai at the campfire on a dune before listening to the sounds of the night under the starry sky. In the morning, shortly before sunrise, grab a hot cup of coffee and watch gnus and zebras at the water hole before experiencing that magic moment when the sun comes up in glittering gold just behind the dunes. All of a sudden, the temperature turns comfortably warm, the night is over, a new day has begun. Africa. The Kalahari Desert Walk perfectly combines a stay at the Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge, as well as a second night at a luxury tented camp in the dunes after an exhausting but rewarding day’s hike!

Daily Itinerary Summary

Day 1: Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge is situated in a vlei among the dunes on the western edge of the Kalahari, where the expansive Karoo desert meets the first red dunes of the Kalahari desert

Guests are welcomed in a spacious reception building, and from there, a wooden walkway leads to the main building, which houses a restaurant with a cozy fireplace, a bar, an inviting lounge, and the Kalahari Lounge

Possible activities: animal watching at the water hole close by; relaxing at the swimming pool; exploring the Kalahari desert on foot on the well-signposted network of hiking trails, by bicycle, or on one of the nature drives in the morning or afternoon

This evening sit down to a delicious 5-course dinner

Meet your guide who will be taking you on your hike through the Kalahari the following day and discuss departure times
