About this trip

Fly into King Shaka International Airport in KwaZulu-Natal where you will be collected by your driver/ guide and transferred to your lodge nestled between the Drakensberg Mountains and Mzimkulu river. Over the next two days, climb the breathtaking Bushman’s Nek Mountain pass on horseback- right through the heart of the Sehlabathebe National Park- and explore parts of two countries most tourists never get the chance to see. Khotso has been offering horse riding in the Southern Drakensberg for well over a decade and have made this incredible activity accessible to all intrepid travellers visiting this beautiful mountain range. If the idea of no hot water or electricity shocks you, then this is not the trip for you! A special journey made up of magnificent views, fun-filled riding and thrilling exposure to the untouched wilds of Lesotho.

Horseback Mountain Experience

All experience levels welcome- even if you’ve never ridden a horse before. There are just under 100 horses at Khotso and it is easy to match a horse to your riding ability
This is a physically exerting trail and attention to your guide is required at all times; a demonstrable degree of fitness is required - riding and hiking up a mountain range is not a walk in the park!
We regret that we cannot take anybody under the age of 12
All guests are required to sign an indemnity form. Horse riding, let alone into a mountain range, can never be wholly risk free.
Your trail is covered by Berg Protection Services, a local private security and healthcare provider to assist in absolute necessity with air lift and ambulance support. Your Basotho guide, Ntatie Charles, has travelled the mountain pass 1000s of times. Nearly all accidents can be avoided by listening and paying attention to your guides.

Thamatu Lodge

An authentic, purpose-built lodge in the serene village of Thamatu. It’s a rustic, basic, brilliant place, yet spacious with multiple dorm-style rondawels (huts) with incredibly comfortable, clean and warm bedding as well as a central lounge/kitchen building with an open fire-place.
