Choosing between Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands isn't always straightforward. One of the most common questions we're asked is what the difference is, and which destination is the better choice for a safari.
Over the past eighteen years of planning safaris across Southern Africa, we've found there isn't a single right answer. The best choice depends on your budget, the kind of safari you want, how much time you have and whether it's your first safari or a return visit.
This guide compares the differences that matter most, helping you decide which safari experience is the best fit for your trip.
Ownership and management
Kruger National Park
The park is managed by South African National Parks (SANParks) and is open to the public. You can visit by paying the required conservation fees.
Sabi Sands Game Reserve
The reserve is made up of privately owned game reserves. To visit, you'll need to stay at one of the lodges inside the reserve.
What This Means for Your Safari
If you want the freedom to visit a public national park, Kruger is open to everyone. If you choose Sabi Sands, you'll need to stay at a lodge inside the reserve.
Size

Kruger National Park
Covering around 19,485 km², it's the area outlined in green on the map above. Its size means you can explore a wide range of habitats, including grasslands, woodlands and rivers.
Sabi Sands Game Reserve
Covering around 650 km², it's much smaller than Kruger National Park. During your stay, game drives take place within the areas used by your lodge rather than across the whole reserve.
What This Means for Your Safari
Kruger's larger size means you'll explore a much bigger area. In Sabi Sands, your safari takes place within a smaller part of the reserve.
Wildlife Viewing

Kruger National Park
You'll have the chance to see the Big Five, along with many other mammals, birds and reptiles. Different areas of the park are also known for different wildlife, so where you explore can shape what you see.
Sabi Sands Game Reserve
It shares the same wildlife as Kruger because there are no fences between the two reserves. It's especially well known for its leopard sightings.
What This Means for Your Safari
Both destinations give you the chance to see the Big Five and many other animals. If seeing a leopard is high on your wish list, Sabi Sands has earned its reputation as one of the best places to see them.
Our Sabi Sands Big Five Safari Experience takes a closer look at the wildlife you can expect to see, including why the reserve is so well known for leopard sightings.
Game Drive Experience

Kruger National Park
You can either drive yourself or join a guided safari in an open safari vehicle. Self drive safaris and guided safaris on the public roads must stay on the designated roads. Many private safari lodges offer guided game drives with fewer vehicles at wildlife sightings than the public roads. At some lodges, guides may also be able to leave the road when appropriate to follow wildlife.
Sabi Sands Game Reserve
All safaris take place in open safari vehicles with a guide. Many game drives also include a dedicated tracker to help find wildlife. Guides can leave the road when appropriate to follow wildlife, and wildlife sightings are usually limited to a small number of vehicles. Many lodges also offer night drives.

What This Means for Your Safari
If you like the flexibility of choosing between self driving and guided game drives, Kruger gives you both options. Staying at a private safari lodge in Kruger offers a similar guided safari experience, while Sabi Sands is built entirely around that style of safari.
Safari Schedule

Kruger National Park
The times of your safari day depend on how you choose to explore the park. If you join a guided safari, the daily schedule is planned for you. If you choose to self drive, you'll need to plan your day around the park's gate opening and closing times.
Sabi Sands Game Reserve
Most lodges follow a similar daily schedule, although small variations between lodges do exist. Your morning game drive will usually begin around 30 minutes before sunrise, followed by a second game drive later in the day.
Example Daily Itinerary
Stage of the Day | Typical Guided Safari |
Early Morning | Morning game drive (around 3 hours). |
Breakfast | Return to the lodge for breakfast. |
Late Morning | Free time to relax and enjoy the lodge. |
Afternoon | Lunch or High Tea is served. |
Late Afternoon | Afternoon game drive (around 3 hours). |
Evening | Dinner at the lodge. |
Optional Activities | Some lodges also offer activities such as guided bush walks, community visits or conservation experiences. |
What This Means for Your Safari
If you join guided safaris, both destinations usually follow a similar pattern, with an early morning game drive and another later in the day. The main difference is that Kruger also gives you the option to self drive, while game drives in Sabi Sands are organised by your lodge as part of your stay.
Safari Cost

Kruger National Park
It's suitable for both budget and luxury travellers. If you're organising your own trip, you can choose where to stay, whether to self drive or book guided safaris, and select options that suit your budget.
Sabi Sands Game Reserve
The focus is on luxury safari lodges, so you'll usually pay more than you would in Kruger. Most stays include your accommodation, meals and two game drives each day, so more of your safari is covered in the upfront price.

Lodges & Accommodation

Kruger National Park
Accommodation ranges from simple self catering rest camps to private lodges. You can choose to stay inside the national park or just outside one of the entrance gates. Many private lodges include meals, while the main rest camps have restaurants and shops and smaller bush camps are designed for self catering. Most rest camps are also fenced, so you won't normally see large wildlife walking through the camp.
Sabi Sands Game Reserve
You'll stay in a private safari lodge. The lodges are generally smaller than many places to stay in Kruger, giving you a quieter and more personal experience. Many also have features such as private decks, swimming pools and views across the bush. At unfenced lodges, you'll be escorted to and from your room after dark because wildlife can move freely through the grounds.
What This Means for Your Safari
If you want the widest choice of places to stay, Kruger gives you more options. If you'd prefer a smaller luxury lodge with a quieter and more personal safari experience, Sabi Sands is likely to be the better fit.
