Updated: Nov 3, 2022

Below are 6 useful tips about Umhlanga Rocks, a vibey seaside town in the province of KwaZulu-Natal/ South Africa.

The town is only a fifteen-minute drive from King Shaka International Airport, which is used by a number of international airlines. It is the ideal ‘basecamp’ for those wishing to experience and explore all that is on offer in KZN .

  • Most of the holiday accommodation is positioned on the shores of the Indian Ocean with views that stretch across the horizon. Visitors have a choice of air b&b’s, guesthouses, and luxury hotels to stay in.

  • The village is a short walking distance from the beach, and here you can find restaurants, boutique stores and essential stores for all of your needs. There is also the Umhlanga Rocks Tourism Information Centre where you can get plenty of info on the area and various day trips and activities.

  • This town has one of the most beautiful promenades that snakes its’ way along the coastline under tree canopies and past seaside cafes. Along the way you will also find the iconic lighthouse and whale-bone pier, which are awesome sights to behold and make great additions to those sunrise photographs!

  • High-tea at The Oyster Box Hotel is quite the occasion and something worth adding to your to-do list. (And the latest craze is hiring 'fat bikes' and pedaling along the golden sand on those balmy beachy days). Dolphin watching boat trips depart from the main beach and deep-sea fishing is available too for those fishy fanatics.

  • To the north of Umhlanga you will discover Big Five Game Reserves, and to the south the bustling city of Durban with several holiday beach towns further along; inland will take you to the famous Drakensberg Mountains and other points of interest like the Midlands Meander.

With the beach, bush and mountains on your doorstep, KwaZulu-Natal has enough diversity for a ten-day vacay and Umhlanga Rocks would make an awesome highlight to your itinerary.
